Loft conversions and top-floor rooms have the most storage potential in the house and the worst storage in practice: a freestanding wardrobe shoved to the one full-height wall, and a triangle of dead space behind it. The triangle is not the problem. The catalogue is.
Why lofts defeat catalogues
Modular furniture assumes a vertical face and a level ceiling, and a loft offers neither. The roof pitches. A purlin crosses the wall at knee height. The stub wall stops at ninety centimetres and the ceiling takes over. None of that appears in a standard range, because a standard range is designed for the average of every room and built for none of them. So the loft, the room where storage is scarcest, ends up storing the least.
What the angle is actually good for
Storage wants different heights for different jobs. Long hanging needs the full-height zone. But folded clothes, drawers, shoes and luggage are all happiest below shoulder height, which is exactly what the sloped zone offers. Drawn as one scheme, the eaves take the drawers and deep storage while the gable wall takes the hanging, and suddenly the room stores more than a square room of the same floor area.
The details that decide it
Doors cut to the pitch
Angled doors have to be cut to your roof’s actual pitch. Not 30, 35 or 45 degrees off a standard sheet. This is precisely where made-to-the-millimetre stops being a slogan: two degrees of error at the top of a door is a visible wedge of shadow by the floor.
Access at the low end
The deepest eaves space is only useful if you can reach it. Pull-out rails, drawer runs and hinged hatches turn the far triangle from a place things get lost into the place the suitcases live.
Light inside the slope
An angled run is a dark run: the ceiling blocks the room’s light exactly where the storage goes. So the light is designed into the joinery instead. Strips washing the rails, drawer runs lit as they open, a sensor bringing it all up as the door does. In the loft runs we build, the inside of the eaves is often the best-lit storage in the house.
Purlins, pipes and the water tank
Real lofts have obstructions. The furniture is drawn around them. Boxing a purlin into the carcass, leaving a serviced void where the plumbing runs. This is survey work, and it is why we measure the room ourselves rather than working from your floor plan.

- The knee-wall drawer bank: a run of deep drawers built into the stub wall, using the depth a freestanding chest cannot reach.
- The gable hanging wall: full-height hanging on the one true wall, double-hung where the drop allows, so nothing long ever meets the slope.
- The eaves wardrobe run: doors cut to the pitch, shelves and pull-outs behind, the triangle worked rather than walled off.
