Ask what a fitted wardrobe is made of and the industry reaches for a brochure word. Premium engineered board. Timber-effect finish. Signature panel. Here is the same information in plain English, from a workshop that machines these materials every day and has no reason to dress them up: most good fitted furniture is MDF where MDF belongs, plywood where plywood belongs, and solid timber only where solid timber behaves.
What the words actually mean
- MDF: medium-density fibreboard. Wood fibre pressed with resin into a dense, uniform, dead-flat sheet with no grain direction. Machines cleanly, takes profile and paint beautifully.
- MFC: melamine-faced chipboard. Coarser compressed chips with a printed melamine face already on it. The staple of flat-pack and budget modular, finished at the factory, edge-banded at the front.
- Plywood: thin wood layers glued in alternating grain. Stiff in span, excellent screw-holding, visible layered edge.
- Veneer: a thin slice of real timber bonded to a stable core, so the surface is genuinely oak or walnut while the panel underneath stays flat.
- Solid timber: the tree itself. Beautiful, strong, and permanently on the move as humidity changes.
Where MDF is the right answer

A painted wardrobe door wants three things: a dead-flat face, crisp machined profiles, and no grain telegraphing through the finish. That is a description of moisture-resistant MDF. It is why our sprayed shaker doors are MDF by choice, not by economy, and why a “solid wood” door in a wide painted panel is usually the worse product: timber moves with the seasons, and a moving panel cracks the paint line at every joint by the second winter.
The honest caveats: MDF is heavy, it wants proper fixings rather than screws into raw edge, and cut edges drink moisture unless they are sealed. A workshop that sprays every face and edge in controlled conditions has answered all three. A brush and a radiator have not.
Where plywood earns its keep

Span a long shelf in MDF and load it with folded jumpers, and in a few years it remembers the load with a sag. The same shelf in birch ply stays straight. Plywood is the structural material of the pair: stiffer in span, far better at holding a screw, happier around fixings that get used. In our carcasses and weight-bearing internals it does the quiet work, and where a design shows its edge, the layered birch line is honest enough to be a feature.
Veneer, honestly
A real wood veneer on a stable core gives you the thing solid timber cannot: a genuinely oak or walnut surface that stays flat across a wardrobe-sized panel. The trick is the word “effect”. Foil and melamine printed to look like timber are photographs of wood, and they age like photographs: the pattern repeats, the edges chip white, and nothing can be refinished. A cheap veneer pretending to be oak is the material we name when we explain why a painted MDF door done properly will outlast it.
Where solid timber belongs
In the pieces that flex, frame and touch: face frames, beadings, drawer boxes if the budget wants them, a window seat top, feet and trims. Small sections of timber stay put and take knocks gracefully. Wide flat panels of it belong in furniture that is allowed to move, which a fitted run scribed tight to your walls is not.
What budget modular is made of
Mostly MFC, cut to standard widths, edge-banded where you will see it. There is nothing dishonest about the material; whole industries run on it. The dishonesty arrives in the naming, when chipboard becomes “premium engineered board” at a premium price. The trade numbers keep everyone honest here: budget modular prices at £300 to £600 per linear metre in published guides, bespoke joinery at £900 to £1,500 and up. The questions that expose a build
- Which board, and what grade? “Engineered wood” is not an answer; moisture-resistant MDF, birch ply or MFC is.
- What is the back panel? A three-millimetre skin pinned on tells you what the rest of the build values.
- How are the edges finished? Sprayed and sealed, solid lipping, or banding that will lift at the corner first.
- What is the finish system? Sprayed in controlled conditions in coats, or brushed on site over primer.
- Can it be repaired? A sprayed finish can be refinished in place; a printed face cannot.
How we build, stated plainly
Sprayed painted doors on moisture-resistant MDF, in any colour there is. Real veneers and solid timber where the design wants them. Properly built carcasses with the structural material doing the structural work. And the reasoning given with the quote, because no material should hide behind a brochure word. If a different build suits your room better, we say so at the drawing stage; the honest engineering case for each material is the whole point of having a workshop of our own.
Questions
Are MDF wardrobes bad quality?
No. Moisture-resistant MDF is the most stable substrate for sprayed and profiled doors, which is why quality workshops use it deliberately. Quality lives in the grade of board, the build and the finish system, not in avoiding the letters MDF.
Is plywood better than MDF for wardrobes?
For different jobs. Plywood is stiffer in span and holds screws better, so it earns its keep in carcasses and long shelves. MDF machines cleaner and stays flatter, so it wins for doors and sprayed finishes. A good build often uses both.
